the astrology of 2026 | Part I - January 2026 - what we don't do matters more than what we do, mature discernment needed, restraint is participation right now - the winter of our discontent

We began the year with that Full Moon in Cancer (tightly conjunct the United States Sun and exact on Venezuela's Sun) on January 3rd that we talked about HERE

Within a couple days of the Full Moon, we have Venus and Mars meeting not only each other, but also meeting up with the Sun in Capricorn. I can't remember a Mars/Venus conjunction (happening every couple years) at the same time as a Mars Cazimi (Mars conjunct Sun) and a Venus Cazimi (Venus conjunct Sun)Conjunctions, like New Moons, are beginnings. So, during a powerful waning Moon ending cycle (The Cancer Full Moon, always powerful since the Moon rules Cancer) when something is designed to be closing out - we get multiple important beginnings.

This is a moment in time that feels paradoxical because it is!

An ending Moon holding space for multiple, high-stakes beginnings that are not waiting politely for the next lunation (the Cappy New Moon next week).

We are starting before we are ready to start. Things will not be well-thought through - just keep this in mind.

To unpack the early days of 2026, it helps to hold the space for paradox - for multiple things to be happening/to be true AT THE SAME TIME rather than try to resolve everything into one clean story.

We have that Cancer Full Moon culmination point with the Moon standing alone. The Cappy stellium - rules, authority, hierarchy, structure - overwhelming our emotional Luna. This is CARE VS CONTROL themes. Applying to Jupiter, there is this feeling of too-much, of expansion, of "more". And then these beginnings (the cazimis and conjunctions) that pile up immediately after the Full Moon with this lunar waning/unwinding energy at play, don’t land on fertile soil. They land on exhaustion, grief, and unresolved dependency dynamics (personal and collective).

Keep this in mind.

The Capricorn stellium plus triple conjunction of Mars/Venus/Sun says that we are beginning under pressure and not inspiration. Venus's conjunction to Mars is desire plus action, attraction plus aggression. Both planets conjunct the Sun pulls in visibility, authority/leadership, identity. In Capricorn we are talking about consequence/accountability, hierarchy, systems, time and karma.

This is not 'fresh start' energy (we get a new battery). This is more like a forced IGNITION (we get a jump start for our dead one)

Think of what a Cazimi does (the planet meeting the Sun, the planet right in the heart of the Sun).

Yes, it brings CLARITY and we can see what we have, what we are dealing with, WHO WE ARE. But it also burns away insulation. We are naked. This is why nothing stays symbolic. In sober, Saturn ruled Capricorn everything is conscripted into SERVICE.

Venus/Mars doesn't feel relational or romantic or creative in the usual sense.

Instead, it feels transactional, contractual, survival-based, “this is the line we’re drawing”, "this is what needs to be done".

I know a lot of astrologers are talking about war (and Neptune goes back into Aries next week and will be right where he was when the Civil War started) and there are certainly connections to previous wars and Uranus/Gemini (April 2026) has been a war signature for the United States since we declared our independence, but what we actually have RIGHT NOW with this set-up is the stuff that is happening/starting is not new stuff. There is a kind of collapse of sequencing.

The system (and us) no longer gets the luxury of clean plates/phases. Endings are starting things and beginnings are carrying karmic weight (they are not fresh starts).

This is the hallmark of a LATE-STAGE CYCLE.

With that Full Moon in Cancer right on the United States Sun we are seeing a late-stage cycle for the U.S. playing out here. The late-stage thing is playing out in some way for all of us, but the U.S. Sun is the poster child.

At the Full Moon we had the Somali corruption scandal in Minneapolis in the news. The story came to light/suited the Full Moon perfectly and always keep in mind with stuff like this that you are seeing this story through your eyes which are unique to you and already SLANTED in a particular direction.

Then the planets continued to consolidate in Capricorn - government/authority - and remember the Full Moon was on the United States Sun, so we are talking about the Federal Government who, among other things because there is ALOT going on, sends an unprecedented number of ICE (immigration and customs enforcement officers) agents into the area/situation. Cappy on steroids - transactional/survival based.

This surge leads quickly to the tragic shooting of a mother in Minneapolis/the Moon outmanned. The Moon (the maternal energy) in Cancer (the sign of mother and child and family and home) has been abandoned by everyone. The ICE agent is Cappy/supported/the structure of society - there are rules that must be followed even when you yourself do not agree with them. That is what holds things together/prevents chaos. This is Cappy's job. It can be heartless. Understand that I am not saying that Capricorn people are heartless. The structure is/can be heartless. And Cappy ruler Saturn is at the end of Pisces - there is much that can go wrong with authority here. The woman who is shot and killed is a mother and symbolizes the Moon but could be said to also have abandoned the Moon because of what she is doing - the Moon in Cancer doesn't go off to war/battle. The Moon in Cancer protects HER family/home. And now her children have no mother. There is a Go Fund Me that has raised a lot of money for her children, but this is more of the Cappy (transactional, system vs nurturing) security. They will have the money but NO MOTHER. Is this the hill a Cancer Moon would have chosen to die on right now. I don't know and I am a Cancer Moon. The Cancer Moon opposing the Cappy Sun asks us - what is being justified as “necessary” that quietly abandons the vulnerable? ON BOTH SIDES. And I realize we could say that she is protecting other mothers/other children. Abstractly. Maybe. I don't know. I do know this isn't an abstract Moon, this is Luna in her own sign. This is personal. And now this woman's children don't have a mother.

The leaders are on their soapboxes and have stirred this whole sh*t show up and on.

Republicans and Democrats have their different 'framings'. But at the end of the day, we have a dead mother, motherless children and a man who has taken a human life (a karmic and life-changing event) in support of this end-stage 'system' that is failing. It could have been just another day at the office for him if he had handled his power/responsibility better. But he is that emboldened Cappy energy with ruler Saturn at the end of the end, so, again, there is a lot that can go wrong and it does. Life as this guy knew it is over.

Anyway, let's get back to January and me off my own soapbox ...

So, again, because I feel I can't say this enough - we have the Full Moon in Cancer (the Moon's sign!) opposed by a stellium/pile-up in Capricorn and applying to Jupiter and now followed by all the Cappy cazimis and conjunctions.

This is how 2026 begins.

And we have a boatload of Aquarius energy starting in just a few days as the Cappy stellium breaks up and the planets move, one at a time, into Aquarius where they are going to meet Pluto - lots of truths/secrets coming out and power plays to be made (don't pigeon-hole yourself into an opinion that isn't fully formed because we will know soon enough what is really going on) - and the unprecedented meeting of Saturn and Neptune at 0 Aries next month during Eclipse season. Whew.

Keep in mind when things start - all these conjunctions! - under a waning Moon then it's like a late degree New Moon (which we are about to have multiple) the BENEFIT GOES TO THOSE WHO ALREADY UNDERSTAND THE SYSTEM, are already in the game and know how to play/know what is going on.

This is NOT a clean slate year. We had better understand our constraints

The Cancer Moon reminds us what our choices cost emotionally. The Capricorn stellium insists they be made anyway. The coming Aries/Aquarius wave ensures they won’t stay private AND, yes, a fight is coming.

Here is how I am thinking we deal with this. This ending/beginning thing being reversed tells me that what we DON'T DO will be just as or even more important than what we do.

Avoid initiating long-term commitments made when we are feeling overwhelmed, grieving or EXHAUSTED (the end of the end energies are still VERY strong). Avoid projects that require constant self-suppression in order for us to maintain control or authority.

Capricorn will let us function without feeling for a while, but Cancer will make sure the bills come due.

If numbing ourselves is part of the buy-in here - that is a RED FLAG.

Avoid formalizing bonds made in urgency, pressure or with scarcity thinking/feeling. Venus/Mars/Sun in Cappy can create INTENSE attraction. We can feel like we need this/whatever 'this' is to survive. Relationships can form based on mutual usefulness. This isn't necessarily a bad thing but just keep in mind that outmanned Moon (which is you, too). Avoid the 'you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours' stuff with intimate relationships. Note - this doesn't mean back scratching itself is a no-no :) Remember these kinds of relationships can work, just know they will calcify into CONTRACTS AND NOT LIVING RELATIONSHIPS.

Ask yourself - if this pressure eased, would I still choose this and if the answer is no, maybe don't seal the deal just yet.

Don't launch stuff/systems that prioritize efficiency over care. Keep in mind that under this sky, systems built without care might still succeed, but they’ll do so by burning people out, and that becomes the story later.

With Mars/Sun 'identity' proclamations can be made in defiance. "This is who I am now, so deal with it" or cutting off parts of us to feel strong/in control/respected or making life decisions to prove our worth. Mars cazimi is hot and fast. But we know Neptune is coming into Aries, Mars' sign, and is going to dissolve rigid self-concepts anyway.

Leave room for revision right now.

What is it time to do? Internal restructuring without public declarations of what they mean. Endings that create space and then don't fill that space immediately! Prepare frameworks without activating them. Clean closets/inboxes. Think - you are not putting up walls or opening doors, you are just laying floor boards.

What can safely wait until the Aquarius energy opens things up?

OK, next post we will look at next week's New Moon in Cappy, the Aqua energies and Neptune's return to Aries.

I hope something here is helpful. And here is my reminder that this blog is not designed to replace your thinking with mine, but I hope to give you something to think about.

BIG CHANGES COMING, so maybe before starting anything let's ask ourselves - does this require me to override my physical body, my grief or my intuition to sustain it?

This time period asks for MATURE DISCERNMENT more than action and what is not set into motion are the real acts of wisdom under these skies.

Trust that restraint is also participation right now ...
