the astrology of the Solar Eclipse New Moon in Libra | October 14th, 2023 - uncomfortable disruptions, power struggles, endings, re-balancing relationships to re-invigorate and restore, new fated relationships, the relationship wound is where the light gets in, eclipse season begins, part I

On SATURDAY, October 14th, 2023, at 1:43PM EDT, the Libra Moon catches up with the Libra Sun at 21 degrees, giving us this month's New Moon - our annual New Moon in Libra. Happening conjunct the South Node of the Moon, currently at 25 degrees Libra, makes this New Moon, a Solar Eclipse.

So, we have the STARTING energy of the New Moon, but much of this is eclipsed by what is ENDING. Circumstances will conspire at this New Moon for us to look at and feel what we don't want. Relationship dynamics that aren't working. Imbalanced partnerships. What isn't fair ... and its ramifications.

Eclipse events are FATED. Our control lies in how we respond/react and not so much in what is actually happening. They are felt most strongly by us personally if they are touching our chart.

We can look to our natal Libra house (21 degrees) for the kind of theme we will be working with personally. Then we consider the general Libra themes (relationship, partnership, balance, justice, women, beauty), our natal relationship with Venus and we look at the event chart for the time of the New Moon, to see how this all might play out.

With Venus, ruler of Libra and this lunation, in Virgo and answering to Mercury and Mercury in Libra answering to Venus, we have these important planets in mutual reception which is a GOOD THING. Maybe the best thing about this Eclipse. Mercury can get to Virgo - where he/she wants to be - by going through Libra, ie being more balanced, diplomatic, attractive, etc, and Venus can get to Libra - where she (as us) wants to be - by going through Virgo, ie being more practical, health-conscious, diligent about the details, etc.

With Mercury's opposition to Chiron exact at the time of the Eclipse - our ideas, plans, words, conversations, the news we are hearing/digesting are catalysts for MAJOR CHANGES that are activated now and play out over time. Some words/thoughts/news can be PAINFUL RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE with this opposition. Words can also END THINGS.

Nothing here is going to be bandaged up by saying just the right thing. With Chiron the pain IS the healing. Thinking about, "why do these words hurt? what is familiar about this?" will help us be more mindful and respond from a higher space. A Libra Moon isn't so much about having a good old cry - like the Moon wants to do/will naturally do - as it is (because Libra is a cardinal air sign) about new ideas/conversations/thinking.

Ultimately this will be the way through and we have smart and strategic Pallas in Libra conjunct Mercury to help, but for now, because much is out of our control with Eclipses - the Sun being obscured by the Moon/the Moon passing between the Earth and Sun - we might be better off giving any provoking situations some SPACE.

The last Full Moon (in Aries, two weeks ago) was about having to take action, not feeling guilty about shaking things up - maybe even having to fight. This Moon is the follow-up to that and fits like a missing puzzle piece we discover under the coffee table days after the puzzle has been put away.

Typically Libra New Moons are about new ways to partner/new people/new connections/new situations. New LOVE - not the deep kind necessarily (although it could be, given time and the Moon is trining Saturn), but the social kind that gets us invited to coffee and walks in the park. New peace and harmony. New negotiations. What is fair now? What is balanced now? What does justice look like now? This is a cardinal energy - something is going to START.

This particular New Moon, speaks of all those usual things, too, but is complicated and over-shadowed by happening on the South Node of the Moon/the dragon's tail - that which has accumulated and become both powerful AND toxic. It speaks of a POWERFUL ENDING, too.

Let's unpack the chart and then we will take a look by sign.

The Moon and Sun are conjunct at 21 degrees Libra. They are conjunct Mercury and Mercury is conjunct Pallas. The Moon is inconjunct Uranus. The Moon is conjunct the South Node/strong/applying and opposes the North Node of where we are needing to go. The Moon squares Pluto and is conjunct asteroid Isis. The Moon in Libra is ruled by Venus in Virgo. Venus opposes Saturn and conjuncts Black Moon Lilith. She is answering to Mercury in Libra in mutual reception.

The Moon and Sun are conjunct at 21 degrees. I see 21 degrees as the 'power next to the throne' (the number that precedes the powerful number 22), in my head, 'the Wolsey degree' (after an infamous cardinal at the time of Henry the VIII)/the Juno degree/maybe the Isis degree and look here she is. 21 degrees pulls in stories and situations that show us what we will do to have and hold onto power and who holds the power. It's a powerful number in its own right BUT gets its power from its proximity to the 22 and cannot forget this.

The Moon in Libra is inconjunct Uranus in Taurus. The Moon in Libra wants relationship and peace and harmony. Uranus brings in something disruptive/chaotic and UNEXPECTED. Our security is shaken. Our partnerships/alliances are shaken. Remember this is a Solar Eclipse designed to be a cosmic reset, so these 'shake-ups' with the South Node are releasing old patterns of IMBALANCE, co-dependency, superficiality, being too nice, trying too hard to keep the peace, being too attached to keeping things fair.

Uranus in Taurus since 2019 is teaching us to accept chaos and insecurity as a MOTIVATION, impetus, SPARK PLUG.

The Moon is ruled by Venus in Virgo. A warrior Goddess now that she is in her morning star phase. Venus is amazing on so many levels. She is the morning (warrior) and evening (lover) star. The Queen of the heavens. She connects us to the rise and fall of cycles, orbits in the shape of a pentagram, shows us our life purpose through the lens of ancient feminine intelligence. Her mutual reception with Mercury in Libra is a good thing here, her opposition to Saturn - which we talked about in the weekly for Tuesday HERE, much more challenging.

The Moon is conjunct Mercury who is EXACTLY opposing Chiron and conjunct Pallas, is final dispositor of this lunation - although with Venus in mutual reception, she might dispute this. His/her conjunction to Pallas gives us access to Libra logic and strategy. Libra can be very competitive - since they keep score - but not in an obvious way. Pallas's need to create the best strategies allow her (as us) to recognize pattern. In Libra this might be show up as patterns of codependency, passive-aggressiveness, etc.

Think about how your relationship strategies are working for you - what do you do to connect, make an impression, get what you want?

Mercury's opposition to Chiron, which we already talked about, looks like a painful ending/conversation/news that triggers our vulnerabilities/old wounds. Venus's opposition to Saturn - feeling what we can't have/feeling alone or old or limited, facing some kind of reality check - reinforces this.

The Moon's final aspect in Libra is a tense/frustrating square to Pluto, who has just stationed direct. This looks like an ending that is also ultimately empowering, but the square says we must TURN A CORNER first.

Pluto in Capricorn has shifted our relationship to government/authority/ambition. As each of us develops enough self-trust to act in our sovereignty, the world shifts on its axis. New dimensional doorways open. Genes are altered. New neural pathways form. We are, the latest science agrees - messing with the experience of being a human-being on planet Earth! And the messing is messy.

The reason we all feel so unstable - URANUS IN TAURUS - is because we are standing on entirely new ground, even if we appear to be standing in the same old place.

Don't try to control the eventual outcome now.  Also don't give your power away to someone else.

During the next couple weeks. Get enough rest. Under-schedule yourself. Stay hydrated. Spend time in nature. Value and keep track of your money and resources. Know that your relationship woundings/these imbalanced spaces is where the light is going to get in ...

Mars has squared Pluto. Pluto will station direct and that will be followed by two 'anything-goes' Eclipses. Situations will conspire to push us to recognize our impact on other people and theirs on us. Finding a sweet spot between being over-dependent and over-independent is CRUCIAL

Speak consistently. Watch carefully what you are paying attention to. It is our attention that creates our shifts in consciousness. Some things we used to love may feel uninviting now. There can be almost an emptiness as our energy shifts. One of the gifts of Venus in Leo all summer was opening us up to see our own vanity and how it has been sludging up our hearts. Vanity locks up our attention and vitality. It comes from our natural fear of obscurity.

Anyhoo, I think I am getting off track now (!), so let's take a more personal look by sign in the next post.

I will pop back in with that in part II or just add it to this post.

I hope something here is helpful. The next Eclipse, in two weeks, will be conjunct Jupiter and require all of us to take a leap of faith .....

Cat I feel like you’ve been my personal astrologer all summer, I cannot tell you how sane your insights have made me as I’ve gone thru a 6-month move, marriage separation and now marriage reunion just in time for Libra eclipse. Lots of lessons around codependency, with a Saturnian “do the work” flare. You’re so spot-on with everything, down to the details—you’re seriously gifted!

Feeling this, this week “There can be almost an emptiness as our energy shifts.”

Sabian symbol for this eclipse is “a child giving birds a drink at a fountain.” Hearing a call to pour love/service/compassion into the places where emptiness arises, especially via small but practical Virgo-y rituals.
