the astrology of the 2026 world cup | as the outer planets form a "cup" in the heavens - peace through competition, hospitality ... and beer

This summer, while the outer planets redraw the future, the World Cup reminds us that not every great contest must become a war. Sometimes the highest expression of Mars is simply to play our hardest, shake hands afterward and maybe, if we are lucky, we discover that the stranger across the field was never really a stranger at all.

Watching these Scottish men (Chiron leaving Aries! Neptune and Saturn in Aries!) and everyone else from around the world having so much fun and enjoying their time here is making my heart happy and allows Americans to see themselves in a new way/appreciate what we have and feel ... dare I even say it ... PATRIOTIC!

I knew the patriotic feeling would be here with Jupiter at the end of Cancer and America's 250th just two weeks away and I knew the UFC fight/octagon thing was not going to breathe life/fire into that (for me), but did I see the Tartan Army coming?! Not me!

Uranus in Gemini (the unusual made local/the 'outsider' coming inside, the 'no one could predict this' in your neighborhood)?! Not to mention the Japanese people cleaning the stadiums, the Swedes discovering ranch dressing, the Norwegians Viking pulls, the Brits incredible insult chants, the Mexican fans tossing the Korean fans joyously in the air. Everyone visiting Walmart and Bucees and Costco and loving them. :) and Mercury in Cancer is saying - here, here is a story you will tell your grandchildren.

Even with this crazy week of ups and downs - I have so much HOPE watching the FANS - I haven't actually watched one full game :)

Let's unpack the chart for the opening game in Mexico.

Uranus conjunct Prometheus EXACT. Wow. Look at that! Prometheus isn't just about "rebellion." He steals fire from the Gods and gives it to humanity.  Doesn't this make me think of the UFC/octagon fight thingie on the Whitehouse lawn getting upstaged by the FANS on the streets of Boston. The fire is INSPIRATION. POSSIBILITY. PASSION. With Prometheus/Uranus in Gemini, fire is shared through communication, movement and exchange. By bringing the outside in. The World Cup - and the outer planets are literally FORMING A FREAKING CUP, folks! - is so Promethean. Think about it - people carrying songs, languages, customs and joy across borders. If you haven't heard NO SCOTLAND, NO PARTY, go Google it, so much fun. That song will be stuck in my head all summer. If I am lucky :)

Sports temporarily suspend status. For ninety minutes, the billionaire and the bartender are wearing the same jersey. The CEO and the plumber are singing the same song. The old and the young. Democrat. Republican. Immigrant. Native-born. Everyone is simply ... a fan.

And I say "fans", but Gemini rules the neighborhood. People don't stay abstract. They don't remain "foreigners." They became the people in line at Dunkin', the people singing outside Fenway, the family at the next table in a restaurant, the group buying way too much at Costco. Uranus in Gemini isn't simply "foreign travel." It's the unfamiliar becoming familiar.

The outsider becomes the NEIGHBOR. That feels incredibly Aquarian, too, and Pluto in Aquarius is answering to Uranus in Gemini. Pluto in Aquarius asks us who we are collectively. The World Cup offers one answer without requiring everyone to agree about everything else! Let's remember we can do this.

This is an important distinction because Gemini doesn't unite through ideology. It unites through conversation and proximity. We stop seeing "Scotland." We meet Angus.

Look at Heracles/Hercules (the hero) in the chart sitting between Mars and the Moon in earthy Taurus. Remember Hercules was at 1 degrees Aries when Neptune met Saturn back in February launching this new air/fire world. Hercules is the hero who must learn that strength is not simply domination. Every labor humbles him. By the end of his journey, brute force has become SERVICE - think of how Leo becomes Virgo. Mars in Taurus already asks us to slow down and embody strength rather than simply react. Mars/Hercules/Moon suggests that masculinity can be expressed through disciplined competition rather than destruction.

For several years with Chiron in Aries, we've lived inside a collective wound around Mars. How do we express courage? Competition? Power? Protection? Identity? Healthy sport has always been one of civilization's answers to that question. The Olympics/the World Cup are ritualized Mars. This is why sober Saturn in Aries (Mars sign) is such a gift to us as dreamy Neptune starts his much longer journey here - competition becomes bounded by rules, respect and eventually mutual admiration. Neptune in Aries may be asking something profound - what if our masculine ideals aren't found by eliminating conflict ... but by sanctifying/ritualizing it?

Then there's Mercury in this chart at 14 degrees Cancer, so tightly conjunct the United States natal Sun. Talking about the United States and what is the United States talking about. And Mercury isn't only communication. He is about visitors. Travelers. Messengers. Commerce. Conversations. The tech devices where this stuff is shared.

The U.S. Sun at 13 Cancer has always been about the nation's identity as a place people ARRIVE. Mercury activating that while millions of visitors pour into American cities says to America, "Remember who you are." Not politically. Humanly.

Instead of endless political arguing, people are hearing, "I love your city." "We had an amazing time." "Everyone was so kind." - which makes everyone want to be kinder. Something shifts. Something is shifting. This is the summer when the outer planets form this amazing bowl pattern - THE WORLD CUP! - in the early air and fire signs/when years happen in weeks. That acceleration needs somewhere to go. The World Cup creates a giant social container. Millions of people are emotionally synchronized. Cheering. Singing. Traveling. Celebrating. Watching together.

It almost functions like an enormous grounding rod for Uranus!

It is not a coincidence the tournament, which runs for a few weeks, begins with Jupiter in Cancer and ends with Jupiter in Leo. Cancer. Hospitality. Hosting. Opening the home. Feeding people. Making guests feel welcome. Then Jupiter enters Leo before the tournament concludes. Hospitality becomes celebration. Performance. Pride. Joy. Music. Parades. Shared spectacle. Welcome leads to 'let's celebrate together'. We have forgotten about what 'welcome' can lead to with all the politics and tech!

We remember that the same fire that can fuel conflict can also light up a stadium.

And, of course, the beer probably helps ...

In the end it's Cancer season - the summer solstice! Hospitality changes both the guest and the host. Anyone who's ever had people stay in their house knows this. You clean more. Cook more. Notice things you had forgotten to take care of and things you had forgotten to appreciate. You become more aware of what is good about your home because you're seeing it through someone else's eyes.

That feels very Jupiter in Cancer. Sometimes the guest reminds the host why the house was worth loving in the first place. That's something even stronger and more important than patriotism.

It's GRATITUDE.

xo all - Happy Solstice, Juneteenth and Father's Day weekend!
