the meaning of the astrology of the Full Moon in Leo | February 5th, 2023 - garnering attention, finding our courage, sudden changes of fortune, something from out of left field

On February 5, 2023 at 1:28PM EST the Leo Moon opposed the Aquarius Sun giving us this month's Full Moon - our annual Full Moon in fiery Leo.

Full Moon are always oppositions. The Sun and the Moon are on opposite sides of the earth or more precisely the ecliptic longitudes of the Sun and Moon are 180 degrees apart.

Full Moons bring things to a culmination, a conclusion or into the light.

Leo is represented by the lion. A lion is a cat. If you live with a cat you have some idea of what this 'king of the beasts' thing is all about. It becomes the cat's house. You become the cat's human. Cats rule. The male lion doesn't just get to mate with his choice of lioness. He gets all the lionesses (and now I am picturing a whole lineup of that little guy from Peanuts dragging his blanket). Leo represents royalty and generosity and fun and romance and children and creativity.

The shadow of the Leo archetype is a kind of arrogance or greed or self-importance, but what you will find with most Leos is that they have a presence - they impress us. Sometimes it's hard for other people to relate to Leo as "one of us".

There is a reason the king of the jungle is the king of the jungle. There is dignity here.

Leo rules the space we are meant to shine through self expression, so yes, the energy needs a lot of attention and needs to feel special and, yes, Leo cares what other people think.

And because there is a need to leave a legacy here, things can get overblown. Leo has trouble with 'humble' (hence this energy leads us to the next sign - the 'humble' Virgo). Leo is ruled by the Sun and MUST shine (the Pluto in Leo generation isn't called the 'Me Generation', for nothing'). It is attached and emotionally reactive.

Aquarius energy (where is Sun is now and opposing the Leo Moon) is the opposite side of the same coin. It's the energy of "we". It is detached (this doesn't mean unaware or uninvolved) and emotionally non-reactive - note I mean the energy and not all Aquarius people, no one is just one thing! It doesn't need to feel special because it already knows it is special. It knows everyone is special (which kind of means no one is special, so you see where Aquarius energy is headed).

Ruled by Uranus, Aquarius is the sign of the genius, the rebel, the criminal. The Aquarius space in our chart is where things will work best by being 'outside the box'. It is unpredictable. Aquarius doesn't do humble either. It's hard for other people to relate to Aquarius as "one of us", too.

So, we have this opposition at any Leo Full Moon.

We come to this part of winter (in the northern hemisphere), and keep in mind, our Sun, the ruler of Leo, is in his detriment in Aquarius and he is just a smidge over half-way through his days here and he (as us) is just really needing this Leo Full Moon to recharge his (our) batteries, because he gets back to himself through rulership - the Sun rules the Moon in Leo. The Moon, because this is her event, is as uncomfortable in Leo as the Sun is in Aquarius. So, whatever is going on is a bit UNCOMFORTABLE. And they are both squaring Uranus - the planet of the unpredictable - change/chaos/the future. Uranus is direct, but covering degrees he has previously been back and forth over. So, something comes out of left field, but not totally out-of-left field.

Within minutes of the Full Moon, the United States shot down a 20-story large, suspected spy balloon from China over North Carolina. Sounds about as unpredictable and out-of-left-field as we can get - on the other hand we know there is an adversarial relationship between the two countries. In the same way in our own lives, something can be unexpected, but not totally unexpected.

The Leo Full Moon ensures whatever is happening is DRAMATIC, requires some kind of courage. The Moon in Leo is creative/generous, also in need of lots of attention. We will be, too!

Let's unpack the chart for this one!

The Moon, at 16 degrees Leo, opposes the Sun in Aquarius. They are forming a powerful T-Square with Uranus in Taurus - ruler of Aquarius. This speaks of a jarring SURPRISE. We can't really say good or bad here. We CAN say unexpected. But, not totally because Uranus is covering old ground from his retrograde - we have been here before in some way - but still pretty damn UNEXPECTED. Even if it's something we want/need, there will be uncomfortable changes connected to the events/situations this Full Moon inspires into being or fruition.

As the Full Moon story plays out over the next couple weeks (and the 6 months until this summer's New Moon in Leo) we can expect situations that are HARD TO FORECAST.

The Full Moon's square to Uranus brings to light or to a culmination tension/frustration related to our Taurus house theme or financial/security matters. This 'coming to light' or culmination is SHOCKING, surprising or maybe with Uranus ruling Aquarius and the Sun in Aquarius - it is more likely to be called innovative or future-focused. Aquarius rules 'the people' and Leo 'the king', so there could be some kind of reversal of fortune that plays out through the T-Square.

The Moon is trining the Aries planets - Jupiter, Chiron and Juno, and we have an exact Jupiter/Ceres opposition in this chart also. Happening at the Full Moon, the Jupiter/Ceres (remember these are the two that negotiated a complicated compromise after Ceres daughter was stolen by Pluto) might speak of just that - a complicated compromise or things beyond our control or 'season of life' situations. Ceres is retrograde here in Libra, so maybe there is some imbalance connected to the past being put to bed IN A BIG WAY since Jupiter does everything big. Relationship and mothering imbalances are highlighted.

Ceres (Mother Earth) and Jupiter (making things bigger) at the time of the Full Moon square Uranus (sudden security changes) speaks of earth changes, significant weather situations - the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, was within a few hours of this Full Moon.

Seismic events are possible in our own lives as this Full Moon plays out, too.

The Full Moon in Leo speaks always about our own solar story.

Following our heart. The way we need to shine. The spotlight that stays empty when we tuck our butt into a seat in the audience. The Age of Aquarius is going to dissolve the space between me and we, and with that happening, it is even more important to know what we stand for/what our heart wants. As the tribal stories loosen their hold on us (the way we connect to stay safe, the way we project an 'other' to avoid our shadow, again to stay safe) we don't want to fall into a kind of group-think.

Remember when Ceres negotiated with Jupiter - as King of the Gods, he might have looked like he held all the cards - she had to shake things up to even get a seat at the table. And, Uranus squaring the Sun/Moon is something like a young upstart coming in and changing things. The teen challenging the parents. And keep in mind all these energies ARE WITHIN US. The Sun in Aquarius pulls in - through an opposition - a recognition of the universal common ground that gives us the strength (Full Moon in Leo) to be uniquely ourselves.

I hope something here is helpful. People with planets/points nearest to 16 degrees of the fixed signs will feel this Full Moon strongest. Get outside. Walk in it. Roar a little ... or a lot.
